NUCA Foundation Awards College Scholarships

Arlington, Va. — The Scholarship Committee of the National Utility Contractors Association’s (NUCA) Foundation for Education and Research has announced the winners of its 2005 Scholarships. The awards were announced at the 2005 Washington Summit and Committee/Board Meetings, May 19, 2005, in Arlington, Va.

Recipients of NUCA Foundation awards are sons and daughters of parents or legal guardians employed by a NUCA member company, and who will begin their freshman year in a college or university this fall. In making its selections, the Scholarship Committee considered an applicant’s scholastic standing, ACT and/or SAT scores, extra-curricular activities, community service, career goals, and an essay on how to attract qualified workers and college graduates to the underground utility industry.

D.A. Foster Memorial Scholarship
($2,000 per year for four years)

Kenton M. Moore fourth in his graduating class at Exeter-Milligan Schools in Exeter, Neb., Kenton has worked in the trenchless construction industry for five years. Kenton, the son of Lori and Brent Moore, who are both employees of Horizontal Boring and Tunneling Co., has completed the 40-hour HAZWOPER course, competent person and confined space training courses, and has earned a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement. In the fall, Kenton will enter the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., and study civil engineering. In his essay, Kenton said that eliminating the image that construction consists of grueling physical labor in the heat and cold is the number one way to attract qualified workers. With the industry becoming more technical every day, the need to show the importance of construction and building the underground infrastructure is imperative to breaking the negative stigma attached to this industry. (Note: The D.A. Foster Memorial Scholarship honors one of NUCA’s founding members, the late D.A. Foster.)

NUCA $4,000 Scholarship
($1,000 per year for four years)

Jeffry is the son of Nancy and Jack Kuthan. His father is an employee of Kurtz Brothers Inc. in Independence, Ohio. With a cumulative grade-point average of 3.775, Jeffry plans to attend Kent State University and major in nursing. After several years of work experience, he would like to gain a nurse anesthetist degree from Case Western Reserve University. Along with being a camp counselor, volunteering to serve meals at a soup kitchen and tutoring high school students, Jeffry worked as an office clerk at Kurtz Brothers, Inc., keeping track of production, and inflow/outflow of materials. In his essay, Jeffry writes that young people, preferably in grades 7 through 10, should be exposed to the industry at career fairs. The students should be told about salaries, job requirements, work experience, benefits and education. Women should also be shown as part of this industry.

NUCA $1,000 Scholarship
($500 per year for two years)

Lauren Sapp, dually enrolled in Bradford High School and Santa Fe Community College, Lauren is 18th in her class. Lauren, the daughter of Pipeline Contractors (Florida) employee Richard Sapp and Debbie Sapp, hopes to major in business administration and work for a major hotel chain. According to her essay, the construction industry needs better marketing tools to
attract qualified workers and college graduates. She indicated that participation in high school career days is essential to making the construction industry more visible to potential students. Career shadowing is also popular among students.

Antonio M. Marinelli Founders Scholarship
($2,500 one-time award)

Thomas is a 1998 graduate of RiverDell Regional High School. Upon graduation, Thomas joined the United States Marine Corps.
