In 1926, Indianapolis Light and Heat Company and Merchant’s Heat and Light Company, combined into the newly incorporated IPL the Indianapolis Power & Light Company. At that time, the company had a total of 105,000 customers. Presently IPL provides retail electric service to more than 460,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Indianapolis and in parts of other Central Indiana communities surrounding Marion County.
With their growth, IPL presently owns and operates mainly three coal-fired generating plants and a separate combustion turbine to produce approximately 3,370 Mega Watts of power. The company’s service territory covers 528 square miles.
