Modern Electric Water Company
The Modern Electric Water Company which is over a hundred years old is based in Spokane, Washington. D. K. McDonald, R. A. Hutchinson, and A. C. Jamison, who had visions of selling Valley land to an influx of land seekers from the East bought approximately 3,000 acres of land and formed the Modern Irrigation and Land Company. The entrepreneurs also formed the Modern Electric Water Company, whose primary purpose was to furnish irrigation water to these 3,000 acres. Landowners assumed the obligation to pay enough in assessments to keep the Modern Electric Water Company functioning. This company is a corporation established under the laws of the State of Washington on a non-profit basis.
When the area's economy changed from agricultural to residential and commercial, the company’s income came from the sale of residential and commercial electricity and water, billed monthly. Since 1993, the company has constructed two 500,000 gallon reservoirs, rebuilt and rehabilitated four wells and pump stations, drilled three new wells, erected new pump stations, and upgraded many miles of water mains without borrowing any money.
The electric department has increased reliability and provided faster service by upgrading power lines and transformers, by completing a new system to monitor substations and feeder usage, as well as installation of remote controlled switching capabilities. In 1999, the new vehicle maintenance or building and grounds building provided storage and an efficient place for vehicle repairs. On May 8, 2000, they moved into their new office complex which features a drive-up window, handicap access, energy efficient lighting, and a plan development area.
