Northwestern Public Service
Northwestern Public Service Company was established in 1923 and has provided reliable, competitively priced electricity and natural gas service. Northwestern Energy's electric and natural gas operations serve customers in Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska. The Company’s headquarter is in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and is one of the largest providers of electricity and natural gas in the northwest quadrant of the United States. They serve approximately 628,500 customers, in Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.
They serve in stable markets, facing limited or no competition. Their electric and natural gas revenue growth is approximately 1.2 percent per year. They are a seasonal business. Because natural gas is used primarily for residential and commercial heating, a significant amount of natural gas revenues are recognized in the first and fourth quarters related to the heating season. Demand for electricity is often greater in the summer and winter months associated with cooling and heating.
Their utility operations are regulated primarily by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission FERC, Nebraska Public Service Commission NPSC, the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission SDPUC and Montana Public Service Commission MPSC.
The Company’s electric transmission system located within Montana consists of over 7,000 miles of transmission lines and associated terminal facilities. This expansive system, with voltage levels ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 volts, serves an area of 97,540 square miles, which is equal to two-thirds of Montana. This transmission system has interconnections to five major transmission systems located in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council WECC area, as well as one interconnection to a system that connects with the Mid-Continent Area Power Pool region.
The Company is highly committed in providing safe and reliable electricity to their customers that includes commercial business, homeowners and other utilities. The company's philosophy continues to be to conduct business in a manner that protects the safety and well being of employees, customers, and the general public. They participate in the formulation of effective and responsible environmental laws, regulations and policies that impact their businesses.
